Orangeburg is a type of pipe made of layers of wood pulp or sheathing pressed together with layers of tar in-between each layer. It is also known as fiber conduit or bituminous fiber pipe. Over time, the pipe compresses and the opening narrows - this will cause blockages.
Clay sewer pipe is unaffected by acids that are present in wastewater. Clay is durable and will last for a very long time. Sometimes tree roots will get into the pipe and cause the joints to break or become disconnected. This will cause stoppages and possible pipe collapse. This photo shows how the tree roots completely disconnected the clay sewer pipe.
What meets code and what’s the most durable solution are two very different questions. With extra heavy cast iron pipe (xhci) additional wall thickness is added to the outside diameter of the pipe making it the most durable choice for underneath the roadway. To prevent root intrusion, the pipe joints are cemented before backfilling.
“No hub“ or hubless cast iron soil pipe and fittings are manufactured in only one class and wall thicknesses vary depending on size. No-hub pipe is a great choice when the pipe isn’t subjected to stress or heavy traffic. This photo is a two-way external cleanout. It allows servicing the sewer line from outside the home. A great modification!
Tree root intrusion into sewer lines is a common problem. Tree roots naturally seek out the best source of water and are attracted to the limitless supply of wastewater found in sewer lines. Roots enter through the joints in the pipe. The roots will expand – which over time leads to structural decay of the pipe and eventual collapse. We offer ways of solving the problem without major costs.
One of the worst things to send down a drain is grease. Cooking grease and oil are the leading causes of clogs . If you pour hot grease down the drain, it sticks to the pipe. - Hot water is no longer hot when it gets underground and the grease is already solidifying. Here’s a photo of what we hydrojetted from a sewer pipe. A regular snake won‘t clear this.
